Anti-Haecceitism and Fundamentality

چکیده
Abstract Is everything about reality either qualitative or somehow determined by the character of itself? Metaphysical anti-Haecceitism is often taken to be claim that this case, and entail fundamentally qualitative. In paper, I (1) argue against idea metaphysical should characterized in such terms, (2) defend a novel way phrase view. This will done taking main arguments for as guide singling out proper commitments view satisfies desideratum set forth arguments. The phrasing shall offer help tell issue apart from some concerns fundamentality that, contend, are orthogonal it—among them, question whether there at all.

Conceivability, Plural Quantification, and Haecceitism
This essay aims to redress the contention that epistemic possibility cannot be a guide to the principles of modal metaphysics. I argue that the interaction between the multi-dimensional intensional framework and intensional plural quantification enables epistemic possibilities to target the haecceitistic properties of individuals. I outline the elements of plural logic, and I specify, then, a m...
متن کاملTwo Conceptions of Fundamentality
This article aims to show that fundamentality is construed differently in the two most prominent strategies of analysis we find in physical science and engineering today: (1) atomistic, reductive analysis and (2) Systems analysis. Correspondingly, atomism is the conception according to which the simplest (smallest) indivisible entity of a certain kind is most fundamental; while systemism, as wi...
متن کاملFundamentality of Ridge Functions
For a given integer d, 1 ≤ d ≤ n − 1, let Ω be a subset of the set of all d × n real matrices. Define the subspace M(Ω) = span{g(Ax) : A ∈ Ω, g ∈ C(IR, IR)} . We give necessary and sufficient conditions on Ω so that M(Ω) is dense in C(IR, IR) in the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets. This generalizes work of Vostrecov and Kreines. We also consider some related problems. §
متن کاملEssence Without Fundamentality
In Modality and Explanatory Reasoning, Boris Kment argues that a single notion of essence can be used to play two different theoretical roles. He thinks there is an important connection between essence and metaphysical necessity, on the one hand, and between essence and metaphysical explanation, on the other. It seems to me that there is a price to be paid for using a single notion of essence t...
متن کاملOn the Fundamentality of Symmetries
That symmetry is fundamental to modern physics is a view frequently expressed by physicists. In his popular expositions Steven Weinberg, for example, has aimed above all to communicate his conviction that ‘symmetries are fundamental, and possibly all that one needs to learn about the physical world beyond quantum mechanics itself’.1 His fellow particle physicist Abdus Salam has argued similarly...
